Concept Outline Decision

During one of the first lessons of the project we were informed of our groups, but we were also given time to discuss possible concepts for the work each department within the group could carry out for the project.
For me, I discussed the possible story and character concepts with the group and noted down the concepts that were stated. After this, I went and cut the concepts down to 6 different concepts, and listed them out so they were more visible for my group and I to see.

The concepts that were developed and noted down were:

  1. The mechanical shark is the ship/vessel of the antagonist.
OR the mechanical shark is its own being and has full control over itself and what it does. (story concept is to find the shark and destroy it, and get the treasure it has.)

  2. The ship/shark consumes other ships/vessels to sustain itself (Comparable to Mortal Engines?)
This concept could work with the two listed above (shark is a shark/shark is a ship).

    A. If the shark is a ship to the antagonist and their crew. The ships consumed could be how essential supplies are gained for the crew of the shark (effectively pillaging/stealing the supplies, and then breaking down the captured ship for resources for their own use).

    B. The shark is its own being and eats other ships as its food supply (as the shark itself is mechanical, it survives by consuming mechanical ships).

  3. If the antagonist is the shark itself, the protagonist’s goal is to destroy the shark.
If the antagonist Is another being, the aim is to destroy the shark/defeat them
In conjunction with either concept, the aim is Infiltrate the shark and obtain the treasure that has been pillaged over the past 100 years.

  4. The dad is using the son (protagonist) for his own gain. By sending a note telling him to follow and collect maps that lead to separate islands to collect treasures on them, and then taking the treasure from his son. 1 vote

  5. Throughout the story, the protagonist is lead to believe that his dad is the antagonist, and travels with the aim of defeating his dad or trying to change his ways.
However, upon arriving at the final level (or towards the end of the game), it is revealed that the dad is being controlled by the mechanical shark, which is actually its own being.
The protagonist’s goal slightly changes to saving his dad and destroying the shark.
This concept also suiting the common fantasy trait of a happy ending (dad being saved).

  6. The main treasure of the game is actually the player's missing father, who’s inside the shark (works with any concept).

After discussing these concepts with my group once more a little later on in the project, I decided to once again cut the number of concepts down and develop the chosen concepts further. I decided to edit the list of concepts down to 2 different concepts. It was at this time that I encountered a problem. This problem was that I couldn't decide on what concept I thought was better/more fitting, and my group all had conflicting thoughts. The solution to this problem was simple, however, and it was to carry out a group vote.

I decided to carry out the group vote for the game's concept as the group would be making a game for this story for the next few months, and so I wanted the games story concept to be enjoyable to the group (or at least as much of the group as possible). Additionally, I also knew that some members of the group liked different concepts to others, so I felt that the best way to avoid any problems or arguments would be a fair vote, and so that's what was carried out.

Since we have a group discord (online communication) server set up, I decided that it would be a good idea to send the concepts on the group server, and have people react to the concept they want to vote for (so the reactions are the votes themselves).

My messages to the group/vote is shown in the image below.

Disord Extended Project Vote.PNG

As shown in the image, as of the time that the screenshot was taken, the first concept received 6 votes, and the second concept only had one vote, meaning that the first concept was decided to be the games story concept by majority vote.

As the group consists of 11 members, no further votes were needed, as the first concept had already won due to the majority vote (as the votes could only be 6-5 at closest at this point, meaning the first concept would still be the winner of the vote).

This concept was the concept that I felt was most fitting for this project (not only out of the two, but out of all the concepts that were noted down for this project), but it was also the concept that I ended up liking the idea of more. So, all in all, I was happy with the vote and its outcome.

Additionally, after carrying out some my research into my audience (audience questionnaire), I was able to find that my audience prefers happier endings/narratives, and so this was definitely the best concept to go for.
