Crew Member 3 Character Backstory

Much like the start of the other character backstories, I started the production of this biography by listing a number of possible concepts that could be used when writing the story (in other words, listed some possible life events/character elements that would be effective to write about in the bio). This was carried out at the beginning of the production for all my character backstory.

This character is an NPC character, and also one of the more minor characters. Although she's part of the protagonist's crew, I don't plan for him to have too much of a prominent role during the events of each island. However, I still wanted to develop the backstory further (than my shortened version) as I had a number of concepts for the character, from when I carried out my character profile templates.

Creation Process:
When starting my full character biographies I decided that for each of them, before writing, I would plan out a list of topics/areas that the biography could include when I would go on to write them. To create this list of possible inclusions, I went back to the character profiles that I had previously created, as I had listed a number of different areas in those that I could write about.

The list for the third crew members backstory is shown below:

Concepts/events for backstory to include:

  • Losing her family to the antagonist/mechanical shark.

  • Life alone on Ignis island.

  • Becoming a blacksmith.

  • Dealing with pirates and others who belittle her (to show off her more fierce personality).

  • One day hoping to see the mechanical sharks defeat.

The backstory is shown below:

Rosa spends her days living alone and lives her daily life on Ignis island as a blacksmith, creating supplies at the request of her patrons. With a personality as fierce and fiery as the flames she manipulates to smelt the ores of Ignis Island, many of the island's inhabitants know that it would be best for them not to get on her bad side.
But Rosa wasn’t always as fierce of a woman as she is now, but became this way due to the tragic events that she witnessed as a child.

During her youth, Rosa lived on Ignis Island with her parents. Both of her parents, like a number of others on the island, made their living by dedicating themselves to their family blacksmith. Rosa was often tasked with helping her mother and father with their tasks, as preparation for the day that she’d be old enough to become a blacksmith herself. Rosa didn’t dislike this work, however, as she was unusually skilled for being such a young age, and was often praised by her parents for her work and effort.

But this work often involved her parents leaving the island to salvage materials that often floated across the surface of the sea. No one knew where the scrap at sea was truly from, but tales of ships disappearing at sea to the jaws of sea monsters were often the stories that were associated with them. Rosa’s parents, many of times, sailed out with some of the other inhabitants of the island to salvage some of the scraps to use for their works. But there soon came a time where they themselves soon encountered the cause of the sea scrap.

While salvaging the scrap that floated across the seas surface, the salvager’s ship was attacked by the monster of the sea, the very monster that was talked about in the tales, the mechanical shark. The members of the ship, during the panic of their ship on the verge of destruction, had no idea as to what was attacking their ship, but all that was known was that they were all doomed and their chance of survival was naught. The only sight seen by the crew was the final attack from the monster, with its metallic jaws tearing through the ship with ease.
Rosa had watched these events from back on the island. She watched in horror as the ship her parents had boarded sank beneath the sea's surface and, with a piercing cry from whatever was attacking the ship, disappeared.
Although the ship was far away, she knew that the ships wreckage, and her parent’s deaths, was due to some sort of monster of the sea. There was nothing else in the seas that would make such a horrific sound.

Few of the inhabitants who were on the ship managed to luckily float and swim back to the island, using the very scrap they had set out to salvage as their life savers. Rosa waited at the shores of Ignis Island for her parents to return, but they never did…

Years passed and Rosa continued to survive on Ignis Island. With her parents no longer alive, she took over her parent’s blacksmith and made use of the skills they had taught her during her youth.
Although growing up wasn’t that easy, as she was not only alone and without the care of her parents, but she often had to deal with a number of unreasonable customers, who would often try to con her out of her wares. At first, many of the customers were successful in purchasing their requested items at a much lower cost, but as Rosa grew older she began to become sick of her customers conning her. This was the start of the emergence of Rosa’s fierce personality.

Rosa, with the help of some other blacksmiths from the island, created two mechanical guns. She had never created such items before, but with the help of some other experience blacksmiths, the results were exactly as planned. Since the creation of the two pistols, she kept them by her side at all times. Although she’d never held such weapons before, she became skilled with them at an incredible rate. These pistols soon became an iconic part of Rosa, and were always at her side, ready to be used against those trying to threaten her for her wares, or trying to con her. It didn’t take long for Rosa to make a name for herself. Although her blacksmith wares were top quality, she soon became a woman known not to be meddled with, and no longer an individual that could be easily bargained with or conned.
But her interest in weapons didn’t quite end there.
Much like her parents before her, Rosa was often required to go out to sea with some other inhabitants of the island in search of salvageable scrap. When going out to sea herself, Rosa knew that there’d be the chance that the very monster that consumed the boat her parents sailed on would return. Because of this and the other mechanical fiends that would often roam the seas, she one day decided to give the ship that went out to sea some protection. She forged cannons to protect the ship, but she also decided to learn how to use them herself. Just like when learning to use her pistols, she learned quickly but was also one of the most accurate and deadly cannon users on the island. Just another reason for people wanting to avoid her bad side.
But with this, she hoped that the monster of the seas would actually return, so she could defeat it and avenge her parents. But the opportunity, to this very day, has yet to arise.

Although Rosa herself has never seen the mechanical shark, she still believes in the existence of the monster at sea and continues to create wares such as her cannons and cannonballs in hopes that her creations will at least one day bring down the monster. But if Rosa was to have it her way, she wishes to travel out to sea and find the monster so she herself could avenge her parents and rid the helplessness that she felt as a child when watching her parents sink beneath the sea.
