Father Character Backstory

To start the production of this backstory, I listed a number of possible concepts that could be used when writing the story (in other words, listed some possible life events/character elements that would be effective to write about in the bio). This was carried out at the beginning of the production for all my character backstories.

This character is an NPC, and also one of the more minor characters that isn't in the game/story for too long (as she dies during the events of the very first island). Because of this, I feel that she's more of a minor character, but at the same time her death introduces the whole concepts/objective of the game/story, and therefore I wanted the biography to include more/be longer than the other backstories for minor characters.

Creation Process:
When starting my character backstories I decided that for each of them, before writing, I would plan out a list of topics/areas that the biography could include when I would go on to write them. To create these list of possible inclusions, I went back to the character profiles that I had previously created, as I had listed a number of different areas in those that I could write about.

The list for the father's backstory is shown below:

Concepts/events for backstory  to include:

  • Life before meeting Amelia

  • Taking in Leonard

  • Becoming a father

  • Learning how to create steampunk machinery

  • An accident resulting in the loss of his arm

  • Creating the prototype arm (his mechanical arm), and then creating Ace’s arm

  • Leaving to find the rumoured island and encountering the mecha shark, leading to his disappearance

The concepts above were included in the biography, however, for most of the areas, I plan to delve into them deeper when creating the backstories and side stories for the characters.

The Backstory is shown below:

Hugh, a forty-seven-year-old husband, and father, is one of few individuals in the world to understand the steampunk technology and machinery that is surfacing around the world in recent years. Hugh himself was once totally new to the concept of steampunk machinery, but with his natural genius and a keen interest in traveling and learning, he became a capable engineer capable of harnessing the power of steampunk technology. This did take many years of learning and tinkering with machinery, but it was a task that Hugh very much enjoyed doing.

From a young age, Hugh held within him an interest in technology and a craving to learn how things, machinery or not, worked. It was because of this interest from a young age that Hugh decided to learn to become an engineer. The inhabitants of his home island, Litore Island, quickly began to see his skill as an engineer shine, and very soon became a well-requested engineer by all on the island who was in need of engineering related work.

During the times he wasn’t needed on the island, he’d often enjoy traveling around the world visiting other islands. It was during this traveling that Hugh was able to continuously develop and further his knowledge of engineering and machinery. However, these journeys never involved his absence from the island for too long, as he had someone waiting for him on Litore Island. This person being his romantic partner, who was a woman named Amelia. She was another inhabitant of Litore Island, and in the past, intrigued by Hugh’s work, approached him. Neither of them knew at the time that this first encounter would lead to them becoming a child, but some would say this meeting was fate.

Upon returning from one of his off-island journeys, now in their adulthood, Amelia had informed Hugh of the deaths of two of their close friends. Upon learning of this Hugh had another worry within him. What about the child of the deceased couple? Hugh and Amelia knew that the child, whose name was Leonard, had few other connections on the islands and that there would be no other to care or help him in his time of need, and so they decided to be the ones to open their arms to the young boy and provide him with much-needed care. Both gave the child the care he all so needed, but they also taught him how to continue living. A few years after Leonard became a part of their family, there was the addition of another family member as Amelia was pregnant with Hugh’s child.
Moving forward in time once again, the child was born. The birth was somewhat smooth, in terms of how smooth childbirth can be, but there was a noticeable difference with the child, is that the baby boy only had one arm. But all was fine as the child was healthy and had no risk to his life, and still had a family willing to provide him with the love and care needed while growing up.

A few years later, now with his son in his childhood, Hugh realised that although his son Ace only having one arm was not life-threatening, it was frustrating Ace that he was being treated differently by the inhabitants of the island, Hugh and Amelia included, even when there were those who were treating Ace differently out of consideration. It was around this time that Hugh saw the light of new inspiration for his engineering. He was now set on the idea of creating a working mechanical prosthetic for his son. This, however, took many more years of journeys and tinkering trial and error, until he eventually began to create an arm that would function.

While on one of his usual journeys Hugh finally began to create the mechanical arm that would one day go on to be the basis for his son's arm. Hugh had eventually gotten his prototype to a point where testing could be carried out, but now he just needed someone the arm could be tested on.
But it was also while on this journey that Hugh was involved in a rather serious accident.
In-between tinkering and inventing Hugh was, of course, an engineer so he would often go around the islands he arrived on and seek work, to gain money and resources to fuel his tinkering. But one day Hugh took up a job at repairing the hull of a ship. A job Hugh would usually complete with ease. However, on this occasion, the supports that were holding up the ship Hugh was working on were weakening and eventually gave way causing the ship to fall. Hugh, startled by the crashing of the steel ship on the ground and the screams of those around him, stumbled away from the ship and fell to the ground. You could say that this saved Hugh’s life, although he didn’t emerge unscathed.
As the boat fell, Hugh’s arm was crushed beneath the weight of the very ship he was working on.
The pain of his arm being crushed was at first excruciating, but soon the pain faded out. But Hugh already knew the reason for this. The nerves in his arm, along with his bones, were damaged and completely destroyed.
The inhabitants of the island managed to hoist the boat off of Hugh and get him to a doctor who was on the island at the time of the event, but it was too late to save his arm.

Hugh however, saw this as an opportunity. He knew that he’d never be able to use his arm again, and so he made a request to the doctor. This request being to have his arm removed so that he could test his own mechanical prosthetic arm on himself.
At first, the doctor questioned his reasoning, but after hearing Hugh’s story about his mechanical prosthetic prototype, the man decided to carry out the request.
And so, after some time to heal after his surgery, and a week on some fine tuning to the mechanical arm which was now attached to his body, Hugh had managed to make his first working mechanical prosthetic. But Hugh spent no time to celebrate his success, as he wanted to create an even better prosthetic for his son using his own arm as the prototype, and then return to his family as soon as possible.

Not long after, Hugh reunited with his family on Litore Island, just in time for Ace’s birthday.
He informed both Amelia and Leonard of the events of his journey but decided to keep his arm a secret from Ace as he didn’t want to spoil the surprise of his present, being the arm he had created for him. The day of Ace’s birthday soon arrived, and Hugh presented his son with his present. He immediately knew the arm was appreciated with the sight of his son's face lighting up. Soon after this Hugh helped attach the arm to Ace, making the minor modifications and adjustments needed for the arm to function properly. It was at this time that Hugh realised the potential of his mechanical prosthetics, and so he decided that, although he had completed what he had wanted to do years before, he’d continue to develop mechanical prosthetics to improve the lives of those in need and would benefit from his work. It was due to this decision that Hugh himself became the originator of mechanical prosthetics, and the increased development and appearance of mechanical prosthetics and body modifications throughout the world, which replaced the outdated prosthetics that were for show, as opposed to functioning as a body part.

Not too long after developing his prosthetics, Hugh had left Litore Island once more to travel to different islands and share his designs of mechanical prosthetics to others. But there was also another reason in which he embarked on this journey. During his many travels throughout his life, he had often heard tales of a rumoured island out at sea. Intrigued by the possible ancient technology of the island, Hugh had planned to attempt to find the location using copies of map fragments that he had previously found during his many journeys throughout his life when traveling to the different islands of the world.
His journey started well, with him traveling around the world and sharing his knowledge of mechanical prosthetics to others, which began the common appearance of mechanical prosthetics and helping others. But his journey came to an end sooner than expected, with an end no one would have hoped for.

While sailing the seas journeying to his final location, the island talked about in rumours and tales, Hugh encountered a monster of myths and legends, the mechanical shark. Hugh had heard tales about this steel behemoth during his previous outings, but that’s all he took them for. Just baseless tales. He never expected for such a creature to exist, and yet alone still be roaming the seas.
But by this time it was all too late. Hugh and his ship were consumed by the steel monster. Hugh was lucky enough not to be shredded by the sharp metal jaws of the shark, but the same couldn’t be said for his ship. Although alive, Hugh was now trapped inside of the stomach of the mechanical shark with no way to escape. Over the time he was trapped inside he plotted a number of plans of escape, but all of these plans ended in failure. Each time another unfortunate crew was consumed, Hugh would hope for their ships to still be intact, and the members on board to still be alive, but with each new ship that was consumed, only the wreckage was presented to Hugh.

Months and years continued to pass, but to this very day, Hugh refuses to give up and continues surviving within the belly of the beast, waiting for the day in which he obtains the means to his survival. Waiting for the day he can return to his waiting family.
