Exhibition Activity - Word Search

For the exhibition, we were told that we would each be required to create an activity that linked to our individual roles. These activities could then be carried out by the public/exhibition viewers while at the event if they wish to. Because of this, I needed to create some sort of activity that linked to my role of being a writer.

This page shows the process taken into creating my own activity, as well as the actual activity itself.

Process

When creating this task, I had already carried out some planning for the exhibition, as previously we had carried out a group-wide planning session. This can be found on the page linked below.

I had a few ideas for my activity after this planning session, and my two main ideas were as follows:

  • Write your own character activity

  • Word search activity

For the first concept, the idea was to work with the art team, as one of their activities was a 'draw your own character' activity. I felt that a 'draw your own character' along with a 'write your own character' could be a good combination.

The second idea was to create a word search. The idea for this was to make use of the names of my characters and level locations (island names) when creating the word search.

Decision/Creation Process

I decided to go with the word search, as I felt that it would be a simple but effective activity, that the children/viewers of the even could carry out if they wish too. In addition to this, I felt that this would be the more time effective option (this will be explained below).

As stated, I used my character names, and location names for the word search as I felt they would be the words that linked with the game/story the most.

The words I used for the word search were as follows:

  • Ace (character name)

  • Octavia (character name)

  • Amelia (character name)

  • Hugh (character name)

  • Leonard (character name)

  • Shurik (character name)

  • Rosa (character name)

  • MechaShark (character)

  • Litore (island name)

  • Sandvine (island name)

  • Glacies (island name)

  • Cascade (island name)

  • Ignis (island name)

To create my word search, I found and used an online generator.

(Puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com, n.d.)

By using an online generator, I was able to save the time of actually making the word search myself. However, as the generation of the words was random, I needed to 'test' the word search to make sure that all of the needed words were listed but to also make sure that there weren't any unwanted words (e.g. curse words).

Due to this, I then had a number of people carry out and test my word search.

To begin with, after I had generated and printed the initial word search, I had a few people from my class test the word search. From this testing, I was able to a problem.

Problem/Solution

After those who were testing and had completed the word search, it was made apparent that most of the words had been generated in the top left corner of the word search (as shown in the image).

I was able to fix this quite simply though, by generating the word search once again, and testing it again, to see if the words were spread out more.

Then with the new word search, after having a number of people in my class testing/completing it, I was able to find that this new variation was the better of the two, as the words were more spread out.

Reflection

After having created this word search, I do feel as though the activity itself is rather basic, and isn't the most interesting of activities (and so I would have liked a to make a more interesting one).

However, I chose this activity due to its simplicity and due to the quickness of which I could create it and have it printed.
